Macadamia is the highest-value nut you can grow, and also the easiest one to get wrong. Farmers plant it because the kernel sells for more per kilo than any other nut. Then they lose a chunk of their first crop…
When a single Musang King durian sells for twenty dollars at a market stall, drip irrigation for durian stops being a water question and becomes a harvest question. A mature durian tree sheds a third to two-thirds of its fruit…
A lychee tree looks tough. It is a tall evergreen that shrugs off the heat of a Guangdong summer and happily sets fruit in places where a peach would wilt. Underneath that leathery canopy, though, sits one of the most…
The cashew is the tree farmers plant because it refuses to die. It holds up through a six-month dry season that would flatten a mango, and that reputation is exactly the problem. Because cashews survive drought, almost nobody waters them,…
Most guava farmers in India, Mexico, and Brazil treat their trees like cacti. The tree is genuinely tough. An established guava will sit out a dry season on a deep taproot and still push out a thin, small crop of…
Coconut is one of the few crops where drip irrigation is still the exception, not the rule. Something like 90 percent of the world’s palms never see a drop of irrigation water. They get rain, and when the rain stops,…
Pomegranates are drought-tolerant, and that is exactly the problem. A pomegranate tree is native to the arid hills of Iran and central Asia, and it will hang on through a dry spell that would kill an avocado or a citrus…
Drip irrigation for coffee is the rare system that has to do two opposite jobs in the same season. First it has to withhold water, then it has to pour it on. Get the first part wrong and your trees…
An apple orchard used to mean a hundred big trees on a wide grid, with rain doing most of the watering. That orchard is basically gone. The modern block packs 1,500 to 2,500 trees onto an acre, every one of…
A date palm is the closest thing farming has to a drought legend. It sits in 48 degree heat, roots snaking down past six meters to find water, and still pushes out fruit year after year. That reputation is exactly…
