Smart farming and irrigation tech
The sensor is the easy part. You can buy a soil moisture probe that runs five years on two AA batteries for under a hundred dollars, shove it in the ground, and it will happily report water content every fifteen…
The first time I walked a drip field that was “running” but barely wetting the soil, the problem wasn’t the tape and it wasn’t the filter. It was pressure. The well pump was fine for a sprinkler, but it couldn’t…
I have watched plenty of growers fight their first grow table. The tray floods, the pump runs dry, the reservoir turns into green soup, and somebody eventually rips the whole thing out and goes back to watering with a hose.…
Most farmers I talk to don’t need to be sold on automation. They’ve seen the controller boxes at the trade show. They’ve watched their neighbor check soil moisture from a phone. They get it. What they actually need is someone…
I’ve watched a lot of farmers treat chemical injection like an afterthought. They buy the injector, they eyeball the dose, and they run it when they remember. Six months later they’re replacing emitters and swearing at the filter housing. Chemical…
Most drip irrigation sits on top of the soil. You can walk the rows, spot-check emitters, see the dry patch when something clogs. Subsurface drip irrigation buries everything. The drip tape or drip line goes 4 to 18 inches underground,…
A soil moisture sensor telling you the field is at 35% when it’s actually at 15%. A flow meter reporting 12 GPM through a zone you know pulls 8. A pressure transducer reading 45 PSI at the head of a…
A farmer in the San Joaquin Valley told me last year that he’d spent $4,200 on soil moisture sensors for his 40-acre almond orchard, and eighteen months later, he still wasn’t sure if they’d paid off. He wasn’t unhappy with…
Most farmers I talk to have never tested their irrigation water. They know their soil. They track rainfall. But the water coming out of their well or canal? It goes straight into the drip lines without a second look. That’s…
I once watched a farmer spend $4,200 replacing a mainline he’d installed six months earlier. The pipe hadn’t cracked from frost or tractor weight. It had imploded, collapsed inward like a soda can. The culprit wasn’t bad pipe. It was…
