Drip irrigation systems and techniques
Most greenhouse growers I talk to think about irrigation in terms of water delivery: is the crop getting enough, is the EC in range, are the drippers clogged? That’s half the picture. The other half is what your watering schedule…
Potatoes are picky about water. Not in a dramatic way. They won’t wilt at the first sign of dry soil like lettuce will. But get the moisture wrong and the damage shows up where you can’t see it: underground, in…
If you farm on sandy soil, you already know the feeling. You irrigate in the morning, and by afternoon the top six inches are bone dry. The water doesn’t hang around. It pulls straight down like someone pulled a plug…
Watermelons are 92% water. That fact alone should tell you something about how much irrigation matters for this crop. But plenty of melon farmers still run furrow irrigation and call it good enough, or switch to drip without adjusting their…
Peppers are drama queens about water. Give them too much and the roots suffocate. Give them too little and you get blossom-end rot, sunscald, and fruit so small they look decorative. Walk the line right and you pull 25 to…
East Asia has some of the most interesting drip irrigation stories on the planet, but you wouldn’t know it from the English-language coverage. China is the world’s largest agricultural producer and its biggest irrigation spender. Japan runs absurdly precise greenhouse…
If you’ve ever walked through a citrus grove in July and seen fruit splitting on the tree, you already know what inconsistent watering does. Citrus trees are drama queens about moisture. Too dry for a week, then a heavy irrigation,…
Mexico is the world’s largest exporter of avocados, the second-largest exporter of tomatoes, and a powerhouse in berry production. But here’s the problem: the country’s biggest growing regions are running out of water. Michoacán, where roughly 80% of Mexico’s avocados…
You can drop $2,000 on a set of research-grade soil moisture sensors and still get readings that steer you wrong. A vegetable grower in central California installed six sensors across a 20-acre tomato field, followed the data religiously, and ended…
When Spain’s reservoirs hit 36% capacity in early 2024 and Catalonia declared a drought emergency, the response wasn’t panic. It was drip irrigation, and lots of it. Spain already leads Europe in drip adoption, with over 1.8 million hectares under…
