Practical guides for farmers
A farmer I know in Ohio told me something that stuck: “My high tunnel cost $8,000 to build, and the first year it paid for itself in tomatoes alone.” He’s still farming in it five years later. High tunnels, also…
When Spain’s reservoirs hit 36% capacity in early 2024 and Catalonia declared a drought emergency, the response wasn’t panic. It was drip irrigation, and lots of it. Spain already leads Europe in drip adoption, with over 1.8 million hectares under…
Southern Africa doesn’t do things halfway. When it’s dry, it’s properly dry. South Africa’s 2015-2018 drought pushed Cape Town within weeks of running out of water entirely. Zimbabwe’s farmers have watched dam levels drop below 30% in back-to-back seasons. And…
If you grow lettuce, spinach, kale, or salad mixes and you’re still running sprinklers overhead, you’re probably burning money on water and fungicide you don’t need to spend. Leafy greens are the crop category where drip irrigation makes the most…

Walk through a vegetable farm in northern Nigeria during January and you’ll see something that wouldn’t have been possible twenty years ago: tomatoes, peppers, and onions growing in the middle of the dry season. The difference isn’t luck. It’s drip…
North Africa is running out of water. Morocco’s per-capita water availability has dropped from about 2,500 cubic meters in 1960 to somewhere around 600 today, and some projections put it below 500 by 2030. Egypt sits at roughly 560 cubic…
Tomatoes are picky about water. Give them too much at the wrong time and you get cracked fruit, bland flavor, and fungal problems that spread through the field in a week. Give them too little during fruit set and the…
The Groundwater Crisis Nobody Wants to Talk About India uses more groundwater than any country on earth. About 250 cubic kilometers a year, roughly a quarter of global groundwater extraction. Most of it goes to agriculture. And the water table…
Why Drip Irrigation Is Catching on in East Africa (And Where It Still Falls Short) I spent a week last year talking to smallholder coffee farmers in Kenya’s Kirinyaga County. Most of them water by hand, carrying buckets or dragging…
