Most farmers treat sprinkler maintenance like a dental cleaning. They know they should do it. They mean to do it. Then planting season hits and suddenly it’s August and a rotor has been spraying half the field’s water into the ditch for six weeks. Sprinkler problems telegraph themselves. You just have to know what you’re looking at.

### Worn Nozzles That Throw Water Where It Doesn’t Belong

This is the most common issue and the easiest to miss. Over time, water passing through brass or plastic nozzles erodes the orifice. The hole gets wider, the spray pattern changes, and your distribution uniformity tanks. A nozzle that started at 3/16 inch can wear to nearly 1/4 inch after three or four seasons of heavy use, especially with sediment in the water.

What to look for: dry spots in the overlap zones between sprinkler heads. If you run a grid pattern and suddenly notice brown patches in the corners that used to get even coverage, check your nozzles. Also watch for water pooling near the base of heads. That’s a sign the spray isn’t reaching far enough.

What to look for: flooding around one head, dry spots further down the line. Walk your zones during operation at least once a month. You’ll spot a stuck rotor from 100 yards away, it’s the one creating a small lake.

What to look for: that distinctive sound stops. If your impact sprinklers are silent, walk over and check. Sometimes you can flick the arm and it’ll start again for a few rotations before sticking. That’s a pivot pin problem, not the spring.

Fix: Disassemble the arm, clean the pivot pin with a wire brush, apply a dab of silicone lubricant (not WD-40, it attracts dust), and reassemble. Broken or stretched springs are $1 to $3. Takes five minutes per head.

Every sprinkler system should have filtration, at the pump, zone valve, or individual heads. Those filters catch sediment, scale, and the occasional dead bug. When they clog, flow drops and the sprinklers don’t reach their designed radius.

You’d be surprised how many systems I see where the filters haven’t been cleaned since installation. On surface water sources especially, check them monthly.

What to look for: reduced throw distance across an entire zone, or sprinklers that seem weak compared to normal. If all the heads in a zone are underperforming, it’s probably the zone valve filter. If it’s just one or two heads, check the individual inlet screens.

Fix: Turn off the water, remove the filter, rinse backward to dislodge trapped particles, and reinstall. If the screen is torn or frame bent, replace it, $5 to $10. Some zone valve filters have a flush port you can open without disassembling anything.

What a Seasonal Maintenance Routine Actually Looks Like

“Create a maintenance schedule” sounds like something a consultant charges $500 to tell you and then you never do it. But for sprinklers, the checklist is short enough to actually follow.

Spring startup:

Walk every zone while it’s running. Look for stuck heads, tilted heads, and uneven spray patterns. Clean or replace all filters at the pump, zone valves, and individual heads. Check nozzle orifices on at least a sample of heads. If several are worn, replace all of them. Run the system at normal pressure and check the gauge at the furthest head. If it’s dropped more than 10% from last season, start looking for leaks.

Mid-season (July/August):

At typical agricultural water rates of $15 to $40 per acre-foot (roughly 326,000 gallons), the water cost alone is modest, maybe $2 to $6. But the real cost is the uneven crop. The overwatered area gets root disease, the underwatered area loses yield, and you don’t discover it until harvest.

When It’s Time to Stop Fixing and Start Replacing

Some problems aren’t worth fixing. My rule: if the replacement part costs more than 40% of a new unit, replace the whole thing. For impact sprinklers this is almost always true. A $25 sprinkler with a $12 problem isn’t worth the rebuild when a new one costs $25 with a warranty.

For gear-driven rotors the math changes. A quality commercial rotor runs $80 to $120 and a rebuild kit is $15 to $30. Worth doing, but only if the housing isn’t damaged. Freeze damage or a cracked body means replace it.

For spray heads, the math is the simplest: they’re $5 to $15 each. If anything is wrong beyond a clogged inlet screen, replace it. Don’t spend 20 minutes trying to fix a $7 part.

Sprinkler maintenance isn’t complicated. It’s just easy to ignore because the problems are gradual. A nozzle wears 0.005 inches a year, a seal starts dripping 1 gallon per minute instead of 3, a rotor sticks once every 20 rotations before it sticks permanently. None of it triggers an emergency. But add it up across a full season and you’re losing water, losing uniformity, and leaving yield on the table. Walk your zones. Check your nozzles. Replace the stuff that’s worn.
