The cashew is the tree farmers plant because it refuses to die. It holds up through a six-month dry season that would flatten a mango, and that reputation is exactly the problem. Because cashews survive drought, almost nobody waters them,…
Passion fruit looks like a tough plant. It climbs a trellis, shrugs off heat, and fruits almost year-round in the tropics. Under that easygoing surface is one of the most drought-sensitive vines a farmer can plant. The roots are shallow,…
Most guava farmers in India, Mexico, and Brazil treat their trees like cacti. The tree is genuinely tough. An established guava will sit out a dry season on a deep taproot and still push out a thin, small crop of…
Most people hear the word “cactus” and assume you can stick it in the ground, walk away, and come back to a harvest. That instinct will ruin a dragon fruit orchard. Dragon fruit (Hylocereus undatus and its red-fleshed cousins, sold…
Coconut is one of the few crops where drip irrigation is still the exception, not the rule. Something like 90 percent of the world’s palms never see a drop of irrigation water. They get rain, and when the rain stops,…
Kiwifruit breaks the usual rules. Most farmers look at a hardy-looking vine and assume it can fend for itself. Kiwifruit is the opposite. It has one of the highest water demands of any temperate fruit, a root system that sits…
Pomegranates are drought-tolerant, and that is exactly the problem. A pomegranate tree is native to the arid hills of Iran and central Asia, and it will hang on through a dry spell that would kill an avocado or a citrus…
Blackberries will grow in a fence row on nothing but rainfall, which is exactly the wrong thing to conclude. A commercial blackberry block is a high-value planting that demands steady water through a short, hot harvest window, and drip irrigation…
Cabbage looks tough in the produce aisle, but in the field it is a shallow-rooted plant that drinks hard at exactly the wrong moment. Drip irrigation for cabbage is how commercial growers feed a fast-bulking crop without drowning its roots…
Raspberries are the divas of the berry patch. Get the water slightly wrong and they punish you three ways: the roots rot, the canes die back, and whatever fruit does form goes soft and gray before it reaches a punnet.…
