Drip Irrigation for Hemp: Fiber, Grain, and CBD Want Different Water (And What Each Costs Per Acre)
The word “hemp” hides three different farms. Fiber hemp is a tall, dense row crop you harvest for stalk. Grain hemp is a drilled field of short plants you thresh for seed. CBD hemp is a spaced-out horticultural crop where every single plant matters. They’re all the same species, Cannabis sativa, but they want different amounts of water, different spacing, and different drip irrigation. Water all three the same way and you’ll drown one while you starve another.
Hemp Is a Thirsty Crop (And It Has Shallow Roots)
Hemp is thirsty. Colorado State University and the University of Vermont both describe it as a high water-use crop, right up there with corn. Budget 20 to 30 inches of water per season, roughly 500 to 760 mm, in a temperate growing region, and adjust for your soil and the weather. Hemp builds biomass in a hurry and wants moisture the whole way through.
The root system is the part most people get wrong, and it decides where your emitters go. Hemp pushes a taproot down four to six feet, but it barely drinks from down there. Nearly all the water and nutrients come out of the top 12 to 18 inches, where the fine feeder roots live. That’s your wetting zone. Run drip tape or an inline emitter line shallow, near the surface, and size your cycles to fill that top foot and a half without shoving water past the roots.
Three Crops, Three Different Spacing and Drip Plans
Fiber hemp is the low-input one. You drill 30 to 60 plants per square meter in rows six to eight inches apart and aim for tall, unbranched stalks. At that density it’s a field crop, and a lot of it gets by on rainfall or a pivot. Drip tape earns its keep on sandy ground and in dry years, where a single line between narrow rows stops a stand from cratering during the stem-elongation stretch.
Grain hemp sits in the middle. Seed 200,000 to 400,000 plants per acre in six- to ten-inch rows and treat it like a small grain. It needs steady moisture at two points: establishment, and the flowering-through-seed-fill window. A dry spell during seed fill gives you small, light seed and a real yield hit.
CBD hemp is the reason drip matters. Growers transplant 1,000 to 4,000 plants per acre on four- to six-foot centers, usually onto plastic mulch with an inline pressure-compensating drip line underneath. Every plant is worth money, so the water has to be even and controllable. This is the one of the three where drip is the default, not an upgrade.
When to Water: The Windows That Decide Yield
Establishment is the stage all three share. The first three to four weeks, the roots are shallow and the plant is fragile. Let the top few inches dry out and you lose stand. On a CBD field that means dead plants you paid real money to transplant.
The other critical windows split by crop. Fiber wants water during stem elongation, the fast midsummer growth that sets stalk height and, by extension, fiber tonnage and price. Grain wants it from flowering through seed fill. CBD wants it at flower, when the plant is building the floral biomass and the cannabinoid content that decide what a buyer will pay. Drought stress at flower drops both the pounds and the CBD percentage in what you harvest.
Overwatering Costs More Than Underwatering
Overwatering is where I see hemp growers hurt themselves worse than with underwatering. Hemp does not like wet feet. Soggy root zones invite Pythium and Fusarium root rots, and on dense CBD flowers they invite Botrytis bud rot, which ruins a crop you spent a season and a pile of input money on. Overwatered fiber hemp lodges, and the stalks you grew for long clean fiber go down in a tangle. Overwatered CBD hemp through late flower produces soft, mold-prone flowers. Err toward slightly dry between cycles rather than slightly wet.
What It Costs Per Acre (And Whether It Pays Back)
Fertigation is worth planning from the start, because hemp is a heavy feeder, especially on nitrogen during vegetative growth, and CBD hemp wants slower-release feeding through flower. A venturi injector on the drip line lets you spoon-feed both. It also means your filter has to stay clean, because fertigation plus dirty water is a fast route to clogged emitters.
Here’s what a broadacre fiber or grain setup costs per acre:
- Drip tape and header lines: $250 to $450
- Layflat header, fittings, and valves: $120 to $180
- 120-mesh disc or screen filter: $80 to $200
- Pressure regulator: $50 to $90
- Venturi injector for fertigation: $30 to $80
- Labor to lay it: $100 to $200
That lands around $630 to $1,200 per acre. Against a 20 to 40 percent yield bump on grain and a 30 to 50 percent water saving versus sprinkler, it pays back in two or three seasons.
CBD hemp runs higher, roughly $1,200 to $2,500 per acre, because you’re adding plastic mulch, a pressure-compensating inline line, and a lot more transplant labor. But the crop is worth far more per acre, so payback is usually a single season, often the same season.
The economics have shifted hard since 2019. CBD biomass that sold for $30 to $40 a pound in 2019 now trades for $1 to $5, which is exactly why every gallon and every percentage point of CBD matters. Fiber runs $150 to $300 a ton, and grain around $0.50 to $1.00 a pound. On margins that thin, wasting 30 percent of your water is the difference between a crop that clears and one that doesn’t.
Filtration Is the Part Nobody Budgets For
Filtration matters more than most new growers expect. Hemp often goes in on well water, which carries iron bacteria and fine silt, or on pond water, which carries algae. Either one clogs drip emitters. Put a 120-mesh disc or screen filter between your source and the drip line, and flush the lines weekly through the season.
China grows most of the world’s fiber hemp. In North America, Colorado, Kentucky, Montana, and Oregon lead after the 2018 Farm Bill, with Canada and France as the other big players. The common thread in every region is the same: water is the input that separates an average hemp crop from a profitable one, and drip is the tool that gives you control over it.
If you’re putting hemp in for the first time, start with the crop type. Fiber and grain hemp on reliable rainfall can wait on drip. CBD hemp should not. Match the spacing and schedule to the end use, keep the top 12 to 18 inches of soil consistently moist but never saturated, and filter the water before it touches an emitter.
