Drip Irrigation for Garlic: Spacing, Scheduling, and What It Actually Costs Per Acre

Garlic quietly rewards precision, and drip irrigation is how you deliver it. The crop does not need a huge volume of water compared to a tomato field, but it is completely unforgiving about when and how that water arrives. Get the timing wrong and you do not lose a few cloves. You lose the whole crop to white rot, or you pull split, stained bulbs that no buyer will touch. I have watched garlic growers clear $12,000 an acre off a well-run drip system, and I have watched the field next door rot in the ground on furrow because the soil never dried out. The difference was the irrigation.

Drip irrigation for garlic works so well because of how the plant is built. Garlic roots are shallow. Nearly all of them sit in the top 30 cm of soil, with the bulk in the first 15 cm. Furrow and sprinkler systems wet the surface unevenly, leave the leaves and neck soaked for hours, and push a lot of water straight past the root zone. Drip puts water right at the root line, keeps the foliage dry, and lets you shut the water off cleanly three weeks before harvest. That last part matters more than most growers realize, and I will get to it.

Laying Out Drip Irrigation for Garlic

The layout depends on your bed width. On a standard 1 m bed with four rows of garlic, one drip line down the center is enough for most soils. On wider beds, or in sandy ground, run two lines 30 cm apart. The number that matters most is emitter spacing. Garlic is planted dense, roughly 10 to 15 cm between cloves in the row, and the roots of neighboring plants overlap, so you do not need an emitter per plant. Emitters every 20 to 30 cm on a 1.0 L/h line do the job.

Drip tape with 20 cm emitter spacing at about 1.1 L/h per meter is the cheapest workable setup, in an 8 mil wall. For a heavier line you plan to reuse for several seasons, switch to pressure-compensating emitters, especially on any slope. Garlic beds on even a 3% grade will over-water the low end and starve the high end with non-compensating tape.

Scheduling Water by Growth Stage

Garlic’s water needs are not flat. They spike and then crash in a way that catches beginners off guard.

Fall planting. In most garlic regions you plant in October or November. The cloves need enough moisture to set roots, then very little. Give them one good soak after planting, around 15 to 20 mm, then back off. Keep the soil damp through winter, never wet. Waterlogged winter soil is where white rot gets its start.

Spring bulbing. This is the window that decides bulb size, usually March through May in the Northern Hemisphere. As the plant shifts from growing leaves to building the bulb, hold the soil at a steady 70 to 80% of field capacity. On loam that usually means about 25 mm twice a week, more on sand, less on clay. Uneven water in this window is the direct cause of split and rough bulbs, because the bulb swells in irregular surges whenever moisture swings.

The dry-down. Two to three weeks before you lift, stop irrigating completely. This is non-negotiable. A wet neck at harvest shortens storage life dramatically, and bulbs pulled from wet soil stain and rot in the shed. Drip lets you stop with a single valve. A furrow field keeps wicking moisture up to the surface for weeks after you think you have stopped.

What Overwatering Costs

White rot, caused by the fungus Sclerotium cepivorum, is garlic’s worst enemy and it thrives in cool, wet soil. Once it is in a field the sclerotia survive for decades and no chemical will clear them. Drip does not prevent white rot, but it removes the single biggest trigger, which is a constantly saturated surface. Keeping the top few centimeters dry while the roots still get water is the best cultural defense you have.

Then there is bulb splitting and sprouting in storage. Split bulbs sell for a fraction of intact ones. A crop that yields 9,000 lb of clean 55 mm-plus bulbs can bring $2.50 to $3.00 a pound wholesale. The same acre with 30% splits and stained wrappers drops under $1.20. That is a five-figure swing on one acre, and nearly all of it traces back to water timing in the final six weeks.

Fertigation Through the Drip Line

Garlic is a moderate feeder but it responds to split nitrogen. Push N through the system in early spring while the leaves are expanding, then cut it off once bulbing starts, because late nitrogen produces soft bulbs that will not store. A little potassium around bulbing helps firmness. Drip is the only practical way to spoon-feed that schedule, rather than broadcasting fertilizer and hoping rain moves it in.

Cost Per Acre

Here is a realistic budget to convert one acre to drip, in US dollars.

Drip tape, 8 mil, 20 cm spacing, roughly 8,000 to 10,000 linear meters depending on bed spacing: $250 to $400.

Filters, screen or disc at 120-mesh, plus a pressure regulator: $120 to $180.

Mainline, submains, and fittings in LDPE: $150 to $250.

Valves and flush caps: $60 to $120.

Labor, a day for two people: $150 to $300.

That comes to roughly $750 to $1,200 an acre, all in. A heavier pressure-compensating system runs closer to $1,200 to $1,600. Set that against a typical garlic gross of $10,000 to $15,000 an acre and the system pays for itself in one season, before you even count the water. On water, drip typically cuts garlic irrigation use 30 to 50% versus furrow. If you are pumping, that is fuel or electricity money back in your pocket, and fertigation through the same line removes a separate pass.

The Bottom Line

Garlic does not reward guesswork. Its shallow roots, its horror of a wet neck, and the brutal economics of clean versus split bulbs all point the same way: precise, stage-based drip. The system pays for itself on quality alone in a single season.
