Greenhouse Heat Wave Emergency Irrigation: What to Do When It Hits 40°C (And What One Day Costs)
Most greenhouse advice tells you how to design cooling systems. Nobody tells you what to do at 2 PM on a Tuesday when the forecast said 34°C and your thermometer reads 42.
That happened to a tomato grower I talked to in Murcia, Spain, last July. His pad-and-fan system was running full tilt, but a hot, dry wind from inland pushed his greenhouse temperature past 40°C by early afternoon. He lost 15% of that week’s tomato yield. Direct loss: about €1,200. In one afternoon.
Heat waves are getting more common and more intense. The European Copernicus climate service reported that July 2025 was the second-hottest month ever recorded globally, and 2026 is tracking even warmer. If you grow in a greenhouse anywhere between the 35th parallels, you’ll face a day like this sooner or later.
Here’s what actually works when the temperature spikes, what makes things worse, and what one bad afternoon costs in real money.
What Happens to Your Plants Above 35°C
Plants don’t just “get hot.” At around 35-37°C, most greenhouse crops hit a wall. Stomata close to conserve water. Transpiration stops. CO2 uptake drops to near zero. Photosynthesis basically shuts down.
Above 40°C, the damage shifts from reversible stress to permanent injury. Pollen becomes sterile. Flowers abort. Fruit scorches on the sun-facing side. Leaf margins burn.
Tomatoes are among the most heat-sensitive greenhouse crops. Studies from the University of Arizona’s Controlled Environment Agriculture Center show that just 4 hours above 35°C can reduce tomato fruit set by 30-40% for that cluster. For peppers, the threshold is a bit higher, around 38°C, but the damage is similar: blossom drop, misshapen fruit, thin walls.
Cucumbers handle heat a little better if humidity stays up, but their transpiration rate skyrockets. A mature cucumber plant in a greenhouse at 38°C can pull 3-4 liters of water per day, nearly double what it uses at 28°C. If your irrigation can’t keep up, wilting starts within hours.
Emergency Irrigation Tactics That Actually Help
1. Pulse the misting system, don’t just run it continuously.
High-pressure fog systems are the gold standard for greenhouse cooling, but they’re not magic. When outside air is already saturated, fog can’t evaporate and you’re just making everything wet. The trick during a heat wave is short pulses, 30-45 seconds every 3-5 minutes, rather than leaving the system on. This gives each pulse time to flash off before the next one hits.
If you don’t have a fog system, a backpack sprayer or hose-end mister aimed at the greenhouse floor and paths every 30 minutes works. Wet the concrete or gravel, not the plants. Evaporation from the floor pulls 2-3°C out of the air. It’s labor-intensive but it’s free.
2. Irrigate early, then again at the peak.
Shift your first irrigation cycle to just before sunrise, around 5-6 AM. This charges the root zone with water before the heat hits. Then run a second, shorter cycle between 12-2 PM, when the greenhouse is hottest. Keep the midday cycle light: 60-70% of your normal volume. You want to cool the root zone, not saturate it.
Saturated media in a hot greenhouse is a recipe for root rot. Pythium loves warm, wet conditions. If your substrate hits 30°C and stays wet, you’re two days from trouble.
3. Whitewash or shade the roof, even temporarily.
If your greenhouse doesn’t have retractable shade screens, a quick coat of whitewash on the roof glass or poly can drop internal temperature by 3-5°C within an hour. The classic mix is hydrated lime and water, roughly 1 kg per 10 liters. Spray it on with a backpack sprayer. It’ll wash off with the next rain.
Some growers keep a few bags of lime and a dedicated sprayer ready all summer. Total cost for a 500m² greenhouse: about €40 in materials and 2 hours of labor. Compare that to losing €1,200 in tomatoes and the math is easy.
4. Cool the irrigation water itself.
This one gets overlooked. If your water tank or mainline sits in direct sun, the water inside can hit 35°C by mid-afternoon. Pouring hot water onto already-stressed roots makes everything worse.
Shade your water tanks. Bury above-ground lines under mulch or soil where possible. One grower in southern Italy runs his drip irrigation supply line through a 200-liter drum buried 60 cm underground, where the soil stays at 18-20°C year-round. The water drops 8-10°C before it reaches the drippers. Cost: about €80 for the drum and fittings.
What Not to Do
Don’t fertilize during a heat wave. Stressed plants can’t take up nutrients properly. The salts sit in the media, raise EC, and pull water out of roots through osmosis. You’re basically salting the soil. Wait until the heat breaks and the plants recover before resuming your fertigation schedule.
Don’t close the greenhouse completely to “keep the cool in.” This is the most common mistake. Without airflow, humidity spikes to 90%+, transpiration stops, and the actual leaf temperature can be 3-5°C higher than the air temperature. Keep exhaust fans running at full speed. Open side vents and ridge vents all the way. Moving hot air is better than stagnant hot air.
Don’t prune or harvest during peak heat. Wounds don’t heal properly above 35°C. Open cuts and broken stems are entry points for Botrytis and bacterial infections. Do your crop work early morning or late evening.
What One Day of Heat Stress Actually Costs
Here are real numbers based on conversations with growers and published trial data:
Tomatoes (beefsteak, 1,000m² greenhouse): One afternoon above 38°C during flowering costs roughly 8-12% of that cluster’s yield. At 20 kg/m² annual production and €1.20/kg wholesale, that’s €240-360 in lost fruit from a single cluster. If the heat wave hits during peak production and affects multiple trusses, the number climbs fast.
Sweet peppers (1,000m²): Blossom drop from a 4-hour heat spike at 40°C typically claims 10-15% of the current flowering cycle. At 12 kg/m² and €1.80/kg, expect €216-324 in losses. Thin-walled fruit from heat stress also grades lower and fetches 30-40% less at market.
Cucumbers (500m²): Cucumbers are less vulnerable to fruit damage but more vulnerable to quality issues. Heat stress triggers bitterness, curved fruit, and short shelf life. A bad heat day can knock 20% off the packout rate for that week’s harvest. At 150 cucumbers/day and €0.50 each (wholesale), that’s €150 in a week.
Leafy greens (500m² NFT or substrate): Lettuce and salad greens bolt above 30°C. Once the stem elongates, the crop is unsellable. A single heat spike can wipe out 100% of mature plants. At €1.50/head and 2,000 heads, that’s a €3,000 bath.
Preparing Before the Next One
After the heat passes, take 20 minutes to write down what worked and what didn’t. Which vents should have been opened sooner? Did the shade screen deploy fast enough? Was the irrigation timing right?
Check your maximum/minimum thermometer. If the peak was above what your cooling system is rated for, you need a backup plan. A portable evaporative cooler costs €200-400 and can protect a 100m² section. It’s cheap insurance.
Test your fog or misting nozzles for clogs. During a heat wave is the wrong time to discover three of your twelve nozzles aren’t firing. Keep a spare set in the greenhouse, pre-cleaned and ready to swap.
If you grow in a region where 38°C+ days are becoming annual events rather than once-a-decade anomalies, it’s time to think about permanent upgrades. Retractable shade screens, roof vents with automated openers, and high-pressure fog systems all cost money. But so does throwing away a week’s harvest every August.
The Murcia grower I mentioned earlier installed a high-pressure fog system after his bad afternoon. Cost: €4,200 for a 1,000m² greenhouse. He figures it paid for itself in two summers, just from the tomatoes he didn’t lose. In 2025, his greenhouse never went above 33°C, even when outside air hit 41.
