Drip irrigation for alfalfa was never the obvious move, the way it is for tomatoes or almonds. Mowers and balers roll over the field six or seven times a season, pocket gophers chew through anything buried, and hay priced by the ton rarely seemed to reward a big upfront spend. That math is shifting, and it is worth understanding where the numbers actually land before you write a check.

Why Alfalfa Is the Last Crop to Switch to Drip

The crop itself makes it hard. Alfalfa is a perennial legume that stays in the ground for three to seven years and gets cut four to eight times each season, depending on climate. Every cutting brings tractors, mower-conditioners, rakes, and balers across the field on a schedule that does not wait for the ground to dry. Surface drip lines would be shredded inside a month. So the only drip configuration that works is subsurface, buried deep enough to sit below any wheel traffic.

There is also a decades-old habit to overcome. Much of the alfalfa in the West sits on heavy clay loams that hold water well, and farmers inherited flood systems that cost almost nothing to run once the canals and border checks are in place. Water in many districts is cheap or tied to “use it or lose it” rights, which actively punished the farmer who saved water. None of that made drip attractive. What changed is simple arithmetic: water is being cut, hay prices are volatile, and the yield difference between a stressed stand and a well-watered one now shows up on the settlement sheet.

The standard buried setup puts heavy-wall drip line 12 to 18 inches underground, laid in rows 40 to 60 inches apart, with pressure-compensating emitters spaced every 12 to 24 inches along the line. That spacing matters more than it does in a vegetable field, because alfalfa’s root system is wide and deep, with a taproot that can push nine feet down on a mature stand. You are not watering a shallow salad crop. You are filling a deep reservoir.

Depth is a compromise. Bury it too shallow and a chisel or a gopher finds it in the first season. Bury it too deep and it takes too long for water to move up to the seedlings after each planting. Twelve to eighteen inches is the sweet spot most university trials settle on. One thing to understand up front: alfalfa is usually established from seed, and a seedling’s roots are shallow. The first 60 to 90 days decide whether the stand fills in or thins out, so you need the surface soil damp during establishment. That usually means a temporary surface drip or a sprinkler pass over the top while the buried system waits below.

Scheduling Around Cuttings

The rhythm that trips people up is the cutting cycle. In a warm region you cut every 28 to 35 days, and the crop needs water right up until a few days before cutting, then a short dry window so the soil is firm enough for traffic and the hay cures fast. The week after cutting is the critical one, because the plant is rebuilding leaf area from stored root reserves and pulling hard on whatever moisture is available.

Here is the practical part. Keep the soil moist through the regrowth phase, then back off just before the swather comes through. You do not want to irrigate the day before cutting, both because wet soil compacts under the baler and because damp hay is how you lose a cutting to mold. With a buried system you get one advantage flood growers do not: you can put water back on within a day or two after cutting, without flooding the field and without waiting for surface water to soak in.

Gophers, Wheel Traffic, and Why Buried Drip Survives

The number one cause of buried drip failure in alfalfa is not a clogged emitter. It is a pocket gopher. These animals are drawn to the moist soil around a buried line, and a single gopher can chew through a lateral in a way that leaks for a month before you notice the wet spot. On a flood field you never saw the problem because there was no buried line to eat.

Growers who make buried drip work treat gopher control as a year-round job, not a spring chore. That means trapping, baiting, or running a gopher wire on a tractor, and it means checking pressure and flow at the submain so a drop flags a break before a whole zone goes dry. The wheel traffic angle is simpler: bury deep enough, and the mowers and balers never touch the lines. Where growers do get hurt is putting the drip too close to a pivot or a road, or forgetting where the laterals run when they go back to chisel or rip.

What It Actually Costs Per Acre

A buried system is the expensive way to water alfalfa, and the numbers are honest about that. Expect the install to land somewhere in this range per acre:

  • Heavy-wall drip line and emitters: $700 to $1,100
  • Filtration, a disc or media setup for surface water: $300 to $600
  • Headers, submains, and valves: $400 to $700
  • Burial and install labor: $400 to $800

That puts a full subsurface install between roughly $1,800 and $3,200 per acre, against maybe $900 to $1,400 for surface drip and next to nothing to keep running an inherited flood system. The payoff is not instant. Alfalfa saves water on a buried system because there is no surface evaporation and no runoff, and trials out of the University of California and the University of Arizona keep landing in the 20 to 30 percent water savings range, with yield bumps of 10 to 25 percent in the better-run fields.

Do the math on your own hay price. At 7 tons per acre and $200 a ton, a 15 percent yield gain is worth about $210 an acre a year before you count water. If water costs you anything real, or if a cut allocation is forcing you to fallow, the buried line starts to look like insurance rather than an upgrade. The catch is the stand itself. Drip lines last 15 to 20 years, but an alfalfa stand gets rotated out in three to seven. That only works if you plan to run alfalfa, or another deep-rooted crop that tolerates buried drip, through that full lifespan. If you rotate to shallow vegetables in year four, you paid for a system you will rip out. Run the crop plan first, then the water plan.

Alfalfa is not the easy drip conversion. It is the one with the biggest water number attached to it, and that is exactly why it is getting real attention now.
