Cut flowers are a high-value crop. A single healthy stem of a specialty sunflower sells for $1.50 to $3.00 at farmers markets. A bucket of 50 lisianthus stems can bring $40 from a florist. When you’re selling stems by the unit, every plant matters.

And here’s the thing about flower farming: overhead sprinklers are quietly destroying your product.

Water spots on petals. Botrytis taking hold in wet foliage. Stems bending under the weight of water drops. I’ve walked through flower fields after a sprinkler run and watched zinnias get hammered flat, their stems kinked at angles that make them unsellable. You can’t fix a bent stem.

Drip irrigation solves all of this. Water goes to the roots, foliage stays dry, and stems stay upright. If you’re growing cut flowers for market and still using overhead irrigation, you’re leaving money on the table every time you water.

Why Drip Makes More Sense for Flowers Than Most Crops

Flower buyers are ruthless about quality. A vegetable with a small blemish still sells. A rose with a brown petal edge doesn’t. Florists, wedding designers, and farmers market customers all judge flowers almost entirely on appearance. Stem straightness. Petal perfection. Leaf health.

Overhead watering damages all three. The weight of water bends stems, especially on tall flowers like sunflowers and gladiolus. Water droplets act like tiny magnifying glasses under sunlight, burning spots onto delicate petals. And wet foliage at night is an open invitation for botrytis gray mold, which can wipe out an entire planting of peonies or ranunculus overnight.

Drip eliminates these problems. The water goes where the plant needs it and stays off everything else. You also get better fertilizer efficiency since you can run nutrients right to the root zone instead of broadcasting them and hoping.

But drip for cut flowers isn’t just a copy-paste of vegetable drip setups. Flowers have different root structures, different spacing needs, and a quality premium that changes the economics entirely.

Spacing: Tighter Than You Think

Most cut flower growers plant in beds, not rows. A standard bed is 30 to 48 inches wide with walking paths between. Within those beds, plant density is high. Four rows of snapdragons in a 36-inch bed. Three rows of celosia. Grid-planted tulips at 4 by 4 inches.

The drip layout follows the planting pattern, not the other way around.

For a 36-inch bed with four plant rows, run two drip lines per bed spaced about 12 inches apart. Each line waters two plant rows. Use drip tape with 8-inch emitter spacing and a flow rate of 0.25 to 0.30 gallons per minute per 100 feet. This puts water close to every plant without over-saturating the center of the bed.

For wider beds (48 inches) with five or six rows, run three drip lines. The extra line adds maybe $120 per acre in material cost. The alternative is dry strips in the middle of your bed where plants struggle and stems come out uneven. Uneven stems mean a lower percentage of marketable product. That $120 buys a lot of peace of mind.

Single-row crops like tall sunflowers or dahlias planted at 12-inch spacing can get away with one drip line per row. But honestly, for sunflowers I run two lines 6 inches apart under each row. Sunflowers are thirsty and the extra line costs almost nothing relative to what each stem sells for. I’d rather have 100% of my sunflowers at marketable height than save $60 on drip tape.

Scheduling: Water When Roots Are Active

Most cut flowers peak in water demand during the rapid stem elongation phase before bloom. For sunflowers, that’s roughly weeks 4 through 8 after planting. For lisianthus, it’s the six weeks between transplant and first bud color.

A common mistake is watering on a fixed schedule regardless of growth stage. Seedlings in week one need short, frequent pulses to keep the top few inches of soil moist. Mature plants three weeks from harvest need longer, deeper soakings that reach 8 to 12 inches down.

For clay-loam soils, I run 30-minute cycles every other day during peak growth. Sandy soils need shorter, more frequent pulses, maybe 15 minutes twice a day during hot weeks. The goal is to keep soil moisture consistent. Flowers are dramatic about water stress. Let sunflowers dry down too far and the stems shorten permanently. Let lisianthus wilt once and the buds abort.

Tensiometers at 6-inch and 12-inch depths take the guesswork out. When the shallow sensor reads 25 to 30 centibars, water now. When both sensors drop below 20, ease off. It’s simple and the sensors pay for themselves after you avoid one botched crop.

Per-Acre Cost Breakdown

Here’s what a drip system for cut flowers actually costs per acre, assuming bed-based production:

Drip tape (8-mil, 8-inch spacing): 12,000 to 15,000 linear feet at $0.03 per foot. That’s $360 to $450 for the tape. If you use heavier 10-mil tape for multi-season use, budget $550 to $650.

Mainline tubing (3/4-inch polyethylene): roughly 400 to 600 feet at $0.30 per foot. Call it $150.

Fittings, connectors, end caps, and a basic disc filter: $200 to $300. Add a pressure regulator for $40 and a simple fertigation injector (venturi type) for another $60.

Total materials: $800 to $1,200 per acre on the low end. A heavy-duty setup with a Dosatron injector and better filtration pushes it to $1,500 to $1,800.

Labor for installation is about 15 to 25 hours per acre for someone who knows what they’re doing. At $18 per hour, that’s another $270 to $450.

All in, a serviceable one-acre drip system for cut flowers lands between $1,100 and $2,300.

What That Investment Returns

Let’s run the numbers on a one-acre planting of specialty sunflowers. At a density of 15,000 plants per acre and a conservative 80% marketable rate under drip, that’s 12,000 stems. At $1.50 per stem wholesale, gross revenue is $18,000.

With overhead sprinklers, you lose stems to bent necks and botrytis. Marketable rate drops to maybe 65%. That’s 9,750 stems and $14,625 gross. The difference is $3,375.

The drip system paid for itself in one season. Every season after that, the materials cost drops because you’re reusing mainline and fittings. Only the drip tape gets replaced annually. That second year, you’re spending $400 on tape and making an extra $3,000 to $4,000 you wouldn’t have had with sprinklers.

For mixed bouquets with higher-value flowers like lisianthus or ranunculus, the math gets even better. A single lisianthus stem wholesales for $0.80 to $1.20. Losing 20 stems per bed to botrytis at that price point adds up fast. I’ve seen growers lose entire lisianthus crops to overhead-watered botrytis. That’s not a loss you recover from.

Drip irrigation for flowers isn’t complicated. It’s the same technology that vegetable growers use, applied to a crop where appearance is the entire product. If you’re still spraying water over your flower beds, you’re damaging the one thing your customers are paying for.
